Day 1: Arusha/Moshi to Londorossi Gate – Hike to Big Tree Camp

Your adventure begins with a drive from Arusha or Moshi to Londorossi Gate (2,250 meters), where registration and permits are processed. A short drive follows to Lemosho Glade, the trek’s starting point.

Hike through the lush rainforest, home to black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and exotic bird species. The trail is well-defined, though sometimes muddy, leading to Big Tree Camp (2,800 meters) where you will spend the night.

Accommodation: Big Tree Camp (Forest Camp)

Day 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, continue the ascent, leaving the rainforest behind and entering the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation transitions to giant heathers, lobelias, and unique high-altitude flora. The hike is steady and rewarding, leading to Shira Ridge before descending slightly to Shira 1 Camp (3,500 meters), where you’ll enjoy breathtaking views.

Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp

Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (Acclimatization Day)

Today’s trek is short and easy, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. Walk across the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in Africa, with clear views of Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak. Upon reaching Shira 2 Camp (3,850 meters), you can take an optional hike to higher elevations before descending back to camp, helping with acclimatization.

Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

This is an important acclimatization day as you ascend to Lava Tower (4,600 meters), where you’ll have lunch. The sudden increase in altitude helps your body adjust before you descend into the Barranco Valley, where you’ll see the stunning giant Senecio trees. The “climb high, sleep low” approach significantly improves acclimatization.

Arrive at Barranco Camp (3,960 meters), set against the imposing Barranco Wall, where you will spend the night.

Accommodation: Barranco Camp

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Begin the day by tackling the Barranco Wall, a steep but exciting climb that requires some light scrambling. The effort is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views at the top.

The trail then leads to Karanga Valley, crossing several ridges. Arrive at Karanga Camp (3,995 meters) for lunch and a well-earned rest. This shorter trek allows for additional acclimatization before the summit push.

Accommodation: Karanga Camp

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (Summit Base Camp)

Today’s trek is a gradual but steady climb to Barafu Camp (4,673 meters), the last stop before the summit attempt. The terrain becomes rocky and barren, marking the start of the Arctic zone.

Upon arrival, you will rest, hydrate, and prepare for the midnight summit push. Your guide will brief you on what to expect and ensure you have everything needed for the final ascent.

Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Day 7: Summit to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Mweka Camp

At midnight, begin the summit attempt under a star-lit sky. The trek is slow and steep, requiring mental and physical endurance.

  • Reach Stella Point (5,756 meters) at dawn, where you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise over Africa.
  • Continue the final 1-hour push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters), the highest point on the continent!

After celebrating, taking photos, and soaking in the incredible views, begin your descent back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters), where you’ll spend the night.
